Kenya - Amboseli National Park, Lake Victoria, Mombasa & more | 16 Things to Do | Travel video

In October 2024, I embarked on my first journey to Africa – to Kenya. Kenya became the 59th country I visited, but also the first on the African continent. This destination caught my attention due to affordable flights, and although I had certain reservations about Africa, the trip ultimately offered many amazing experiences. However, there are some “buts” that make me uncertain whether I’d want to return to Africa regularly.

One of the main reasons I chose Kenya was, of course, the safari. I opted for a two-day trip to Amboseli National Park, renowned for its stunning wildlife and views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Seeing animals such as elephants, zebras, giraffes, flamingos, hyenas, and lions was unforgettable. Unfortunately, I couldn’t capture the lions on video, but the experience in the park was one of the highlights of my trip.

Another incredible adventure was driving a rented car to Lake Victoria. Driving in Kenya is an experience for the brave, but manageable. Along the way, we visited Kisumu Museum, Mai Mahiu Longonot View Point, Kit-Mikayi, Menengai Crater, Kericho Tea Plantations, and Thompson Falls Nyahururu. The highlight was a boat trip to Mageta Island – a beautiful place where we had the lake almost entirely to ourselves.

During the trip, I visited Nairobi and Mombasa. Nairobi didn’t impress me much – it’s rather a dull city. On the other hand, the train ride to Mombasa was fantastic. Mombasa has its charm, even though there are only a few landmarks, like Fort Jesus. The people in Mombasa felt much friendlier to me, and the city’s atmosphere was pleasant.

Now, let’s get to the “but.” While Kenya is beautiful, traveling here has its challenges. Constantly haggling over prices becomes exhausting after a while. Dual pricing for tourists is common, but in Kenya, some fees felt excessive – for example, high entry fees to natural sites. It also bothered me that expensive entry fees often included a mandatory guide who then demanded additional payment. Encounters with drug-addicted beggars and awkward situations when paying (like being asked for extra fees after the safari, which I politely declined) unfortunately detracted somewhat from the otherwise great experiences.

Kenya is a fascinating destination with stunning nature and unforgettable experiences, but it also has its downsides. If you’re looking for a place to travel more comfortably with a better approach to tourists, I’d recommend Southeast Asia instead. That said, I will definitely return to Africa in the future – next time, I’ll plan a more low-cost, adventurous trip. Kenya showed me there’s no need to fear Africa, but traveling here requires patience and the ability to handle some very uncomfortable situations.
