He purchased a diner, a bar, a historic movie theater, and several other properties through a secret trust, pouring millions into restoring old buildings and creating new businesses. Locals started calling it “Haileywood” as jobs appeared and the once-sleepy Main Street was transformed. But beneath the surface, tension was growing. Contractors filed lawsuits for unpaid work, employees were let go without warning, and reporters who tried to investigate were followed, harassed, and in some cases confronted. The story became even more bizarre when an IFC film crew shot a segment about Willis’s takeover, only for the footage to be suppressed under legal threats.
