I tried a Saltwater World challenge, four player... Only, there was only me to play all four players...
This was done via DS download play - so only one copy of the game required.
I didn't speed up the data upload/sync moments so you know how much waiting times is introduced by hosting for 3 people.
The sync is good enough that you can play by yourself, it would be easier to use the touch screen but for amusement I stuck with buttons, probably essential to use touch screen if you decided to play games that need the d-pad as well tho.
