2024 Ford F-150 Raptor Expert Review

Ford's Raptor franchise is now something of a global phenomenon , but it all started with the original F-150 SVT Raptor from 2010. That truck was a more powerful, off-road tuned version of the popular F-150 full-size pickup . This approach continues with the current F-150 Raptor, which went on sale for the 2021 model year and welcomed the V-8-powered Raptor R model for 2023. Now for 2024, several updates promise increased rugged capability.

What We Think

Simply put, the F-150 Raptor lives up to the hype. It's an impressive all-around off-roader, which helped it win the 2021 Four Wheeler Pickup Truck of the Year award. The Raptor attacks desert roads and trails at near triple-digit speeds "with an unnerving degree of comfort and composure," noted Four Wheeler.

It's composed on the highway, too. The powerful V-6 engine and transmission pair nicely together, and the truck handles with relative ease on curvy mountain roads.The love doesn't fade, either; even after 14 months with a Raptor, we were still positively smitten. We'll have to see how the 2024 updates improve the formula. That said, the standard Raptor doesn't feel like a true supertruck. For something that is monstrously powerful and capable as well as pillowy smooth, opt for the insane Raptor R. We love the supercharged version of Ford's truck so much that we declared it the winner over the outrageous GMC Hummer EV in a comparison test.

What Engine Comes Standard in the F-150 Raptor?

As standard, the F-150 Raptor is equipped with a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 engine making 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. It's connected to a 10-speed automatic transmission and 4WD. In MotorTrend testing, the regular Raptor accelerated from 0-60 mph in 5.6 seconds. Expect fuel economy to come in at about 14-15/16-18 mpg city/highway.
