Coronavirus outbreak: NY stay-at-home order likely extended in some parts of state past May 15 |FULL

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo provided a briefing on Monday regarding the state's ongoing COVID-19 crisis and response.

During the briefing, Cuomo listed 10 key points the state must meet in order to reopen safely amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The criteria includes meeting the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines to have a 14-day decrease in COVID-19 cases, having a testing regimen, and ensuring the region has the health-care capacity to deal with hospitalizations if there's an increase. Cuomo's stay-at-home order will likely be extended beyond May 15 in many parts of the state, but restrictions could be relaxed in some regions if they have sufficient hospital capacity and meet criteria.

The governor said that the state is seeing a flattened curve for COVID-19-related hospitalizations, which he called "not great." He said that a declining curve is the goal rather than a flattened one.

Cuomo also said the state is seeing an increase in food bank use throughout, including a 40-60 per cent use increase across upstate New York, a 40 per cent increase in Long Island, a 100 per cent increase in New York City and a 200 per cent increase in Westchester.

In addition, the governor announced the Nourish New York initiative, where instead of companies dumping unsold milk, for such dairy products to be given to people in need.

New York has now tested 7,500 people for antibodies against COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, and that 14.9 per cent tested positive, indicating they were infected and survived. The infection rate was up from 13.9 per cent when the initial results from 3,000 people were disclosed last week.
