‘gather the faithful and propose a toast... to the epoch of indifference’
The Swedish death metal band ‘In Flames’ can almost be considered the ‘Nirvana’ of metal in the early 2000’s. Their sound influenced countless bands (in particular, those of the ‘metalcore’ genre) which sadly I know little to nothing about because I stopped caring about this music back in the early 2000’s. Well fast forward to 2021. It’s amazing to see how guitar playing and heavy music have evolved. I feel like a kid again. There are some bands that make their guitars sound like chainsaws farting and robots short-circuiting, while others play with such mind-bogglingly diverse techniques that you find either your jaw dropping uncontrollably or you just start laughing. But for me, the In Flames from 1999 is where it’s at. This is such great writing. Simple guitar playing, expertly arranged. And there’s even a piano thrown in for fun.
So I should probably mention that here I’m attempting to re-create their song ‘Ordinary Story’ from the album ‘Colony’ from the ground up. It was a great exercise in transcribing full band music (drums, bass, guitar, etc) and then taking a day to play it and then a day to mix it/film this.
Of course I have to thank the people at @abasiconcepts for this Larada Legion 7. What a dream to play. Seriously. All guitar tracks (except the solo) were recorded with it.
For anyone curious, I’m playing this song on a guitar that’s tuned to drop A.
A bit unusual for an account dedicated to classical piano music, but oh well. I like unusual.
Have a great day.
