Rovers signed experienced centre back, Kevin Moran, on a free transfer in January 1990 after the Irishman had left Spanish side, Sporting Gijón. Prior to joining Rovers, Moran had spent a decade at Manchester United, making over 200 appearances for the Reds. He had spent a decade as a Republic of Ireland international with over 60 appearances to his name, and had recently featured in the European Championships for Ireland in the summer of 1988.
Arriving at Blackburn Rovers, aged 33, it was clear that Rovers were getting a player who had seen it all and whose experience would be vital if Rovers were to make it back to the English top flight.
Moran's Rovers debut came on January 27th 1990 during a 3-0 win against Stoke City. His first Rovers goal came on March 17th in a 3-0 win away at Middlesbrough. A week later, Moran scored his second goal for the club in a 2-0 win against Newcastle at Ewood Park. Moran made 19 appearances in his first five months at the club and helped Rovers to a 5th place finish in the League. Sadly, Rovers lost the resulting play off fixture against Swindon Town over two legs.
His first full season, the 1990/91 campaign, was a disappointing one for the club as Rovers finished 19th in the Second Division. Nevertheless, Moran was an established part of the backline, making 35 appearances in all competitions and scoring once. That goal, being a winning penalty away at Middlesbrough.
The following season is arguably Moran's most memorable in a Rovers shirt and is certainly a massive season in the club's history. Under the stewardship of Kenny Dalglish and the backing of Jack Walker, Rovers finally made it back to the top Division of English football after a dramatic ending to the season. Rovers finished the season in 6th spot and had made it to the play offs. After a thrilling 4-2 first leg win over Derby County in the play off semi finals, Kevin Moran left his mark in the second leg. Rovers lost the return leg 2-1, but Moran scored the vital goal that sent Rovers through to the play off final against Leicester. A final in which Moran would captain Rovers to victory and help seal the club's place in the newly formed Premier League.
Moran's goal against Derby is one that epitomised his bravery, courage and determination as a player and is one that will live long in the memory of Blackburn Rovers supporters. Moran played for two more seasons at Rovers, both as a Premier League player, and made 65 appearances in that time, scoring six times. He helped Rovers to finishes of 4th and 2nd respectively in the first two seasons of the Premier League being formed, aged 36 and 37 during those occasions.
Moran retired at the end of the 1993/94 season, a year before Blackburn Rovers achieved the ultimate prize. Kevin Moran is remembered by the fans as a warrior. A no nonsense, tough tackling, solid defender who helped Rovers make it back to the top flight. His experience played a key role in establishing Rovers as a top flight club again. Kevin Moran made 161 appearances for Rovers over four seasons and scored 12 goals. Here are those goals.
