Jung's Deeper Meaning of Introversion
Carl Jung was a complex and deep thinker whose ideas consist of an incredible breadth as well as depth. Jung not only coined and popularized the terms extraversion and introversion, he also developed an entire typology that illuminated the psycho-dynamics of the unconscious mind. For Jung, introversion was not merely a description of a person's tendency to avoid social interactions or talk less, it was also a psychological mechanism that operated via the build up of the psyche's libido in the unconscious. Jung has described this process as the conscious mind's exploration into the layers of the collective unconscious, illustrated in myths as the journey to the underworld. For this reason it makes no sense to detach Jung's typology from the rest of his core ideas and understandings of the psyche.

Jung's psychology involves a deep understanding of symbolism, which Jung articulates through the conception of archetypes. These psychological operations all relate to the idea of introversion and the domain of the soul.
