In this short math lesson, I show you step by step how to rationalize the denominator in the rational expression 1/(√a − √b). Starting with the difference of squares formula c^2 - d^2 = (c - d)*(c + d), I apply it in reverse with c = √a and d = √b. Using the FOIL Method, I demonstrate why the cross terms cancel when multiplying by √a + √b. To keep the fraction equivalent, the numerator must also be multiplied, effectively multiplying by 1. The final simplified result is circled at the end: (√a + √b)/(a - b). This technique is key in algebra, precalculus, and calculus when solving limits or simplifying radical expressions.
