This unusual engine was patented by Henry Essex of Buffalo, New York in 1903 and was manufactured there by the Essex & Smith Co. which at one time had over 140 employees. The opposed working piston and displacer design is unique among stirling engines. This example is the earliest model, "no. 1", but the company went on to manufacture many variations of it as well as other types of small hot air engines. The primary use for the model 1 was to power rotating displays for store windows; the company also made turntables for this purpose.
