Toronto Pearson International Airport has a rich history dating back to 1937, when it was originally established as Malton Airport. It was built by the Toronto Harbour Commission as an alternate airfield to the downtown Toronto Island Airport (now Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport).
Key Milestones
1938: The first passenger flight landed at Malton Airport on August 29, operated by American Airways.
1964: The first modern terminal, Aeroquay 1, was opened with a circular design to handle 3.5 million passengers.
1984: The airport was renamed Lester B. Pearson International Airport in honor of former Canadian Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson.
1996: The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) took over operations from Transport Canada.
2004: A new Terminal 1 was opened, replacing the original Aeroquay 1.
2008: Terminal 2 was demolished, leaving Pearson with just two terminals (Terminal 1 and Terminal 3).
Today, Toronto Pearson is Canada’s largest and busiest airport, handling millions of passengers annually.
