Thiruparankundram, located near Madurai, is celebrated as the first of Lord Murugan’s sacred Six Abodes (Aarupadai Veedu). This ancient hill temple is praised in the hymns of saints such as Nakkeerar, Arunagirinathar, Pamban Swamigal, Thirugnanasambandar, Appar, Sundarar, and Manickavasagar.
According to legend, when the Devas were tormented by the demon Surapadman, they sought the help of Lord Shiva. From His third eye emerged six sparks, which transformed into Lord Murugan with six faces. Murugan destroyed Surapadman, transforming him into the peacock and rooster. As gratitude, Indra offered his daughter Deivanai in marriage to Murugan, and their divine wedding took place at Thiruparankundram, witnessed by all gods, sages, and celestial beings.
This sacred place is also known for the story of Nakkeerar. When he was imprisoned by a fierce demon for unknowingly committing a mistake during Shiva worship, he sang the Thirumurugaatruppadai, pleading to Lord Murugan. Pleased with his devotion, Murugan destroyed the demon and freed all the captives. Murugan then created the holy Kasi Theertham on the hill by striking his Vel (spear).
The temple is filled with mystical wonders —
the rock-cut shrine, ancient Pandiya-era cave architecture, the presence of five main deities in a single sanctum, and the rare sight of white peacocks, believed to be celestial beings in disguise.
Unique festivals such as:
• Vel Taking Festival
• Kandha Sashti
• Panguni Uthiram
• Teppam Festival
are celebrated with great devotion. Unlike other temples, here only the Vel receives abhishekam, not the main deity.
