Are you a violinist or violist recovering from an injury? Or did you stop playing a while ago, and want to start back up again? Join Pittsburgh Symphony violinist Alison Fujito as she discusses her recent rotator cuff surgery, warmups, technical exercises, and come with her on the road back to playing and performing!
00:00 Hi! Are you ready?
6:21 warming up with heat and stretching
10:50 Stretching with the Big Red Ball, except somehow it got OUT of the picture -- oops! Here's a good link for ball stretches where the exercise ball is actually IN the picture! • Shoulder stretch with exercise ball
13:07 holding the bow -- it's a lot less of a "hold" than you might think!
17:55 holding the violin, no squeezing, please!
19:50 Dorothy DeLay lane change exercise -- and her suggestion was, if anyone in your house complains about how bad this exercise sounds, tell them they owe you $1.00! And no, it's not easy, even when it doesn't sound good!
25:17 Sevcik “finger doodles," everyone's favorite warm-up exercise. Did't they name a poodle mix after these exercises?
28:32 Practice the first line with me!
On your own, you can start out with whole notes (4 metronome clicks for each note) to make sure you are in tune, and then half notes, and then quarter notes.
We will play each measure twice as quarter notes, then twice as 8th notes, then twice as 16th notes. Then go on without a break to the next line. Keep your fingers light, keep your hand quiet (no rocking the hand -- you want to be in a position where your fingers can just drop down onto the right notes with no hand movement!
Keep fingers down if it's not necessary to lift them. When you lift them, don't lift them higher than you need to!
32:55 Practice the last 4 lines with me!
On your own, first practice each beat of each measure separately, the same way we practiced the first line. Set the metronome to wherever you feel comfortable as you learn this. You can even start by doing whole notes (4 metronome clicks for each note), then half notes, then quarter notes, and so on.
We'll play each measure as 16th notes, repeat each measure, and go on without a break to the next measure.
Once this page becomes comfortable, you can start moving the metronome up to a slightly faster speed!
