Injured Lahaina firefighter returns to Maui with a hero's welcome

On Wednesday night of August 23, a gentleman was being assisted in a wheelchair after his flight landed at Kahului Airport in East Maui.
Waiting for him at the gate were more than a dozen men and women from the Maui Fire Department, led by Chief Brad Ventura, together with a handful of first responders, as well as friends and bystanders.
Upon the man's arrival, the place erupted in applause and cheering as everyone present rendered him a hero's welcome.
According to Maui Fire Department personnel who had to prioritize the unnamed individual's ongoing recovery, they did confirm he was one of their own who sustained injuries during the massive, fast-moving wildfire that devastated the historic town of Lahaina in West Maui on August 8.
He was evacuated that evening for smoke inhalation and leg injury. After being initially treated at Maui Medical Center at Kahului, he was later transferred to the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu for further treatment and recovery.
