Welcome to Sri Kalahasti, one of India’s most mysterious and powerful temples! Right here, inside the inner sanctum, oil lamps gently flicker even though there’s no breeze—an incredible sign of God Shiva’s living energy. This temple is the ‘Vayu Linga,’ representing the element of Air, and it’s one of the five legendary Pancha Bhoota Lingas. Sri Kalahasti is truly special, The Shiva Linga here appeared on its own, or swayambhu, and the temple’s very name comes from three devoted creatures—a spider (Sri), a snake (Kala), and an elephant (Hasti)—who all worshipped God Shiva right here. Impressed by their devotion, God Shiva blessed this place, making it a spiritual powerhouse. Vayu is one of the five elements of nature, and the remaining four elements also have their own temples. Ekambareswarar Temple in Kanchipuram represents the earth element, Jambukeshwara Temple in Tiruchirapalli represents the water element, and Arunachaleshwarar Temple in Tiruvannamalai represents the fire element. The fifth element, ether or sky, is represented by the Nataraja Temple in Chidambaram.
The earliest reference to the Srikalahasti Temple is found in the Tirukkalatti Devaram by Thirunjana Sambandar. The main temple was renovated and extended by many kings of the Chola and Vijayanagara kingdoms. You can even see the Vijayanagara Kingdom’s emblem inside the temple. This is the famous story behind the name Srikalahasti. A long time ago, in the Treta Yuga, a spider lived near the garbhagruha of sri Srikalahasti temple . The spider was a very devoted follower of God Shiva.
Every day, the spider wove beautiful webs and structures with its threads to honor God Shiva. God Shiva wanted to test the spider’s devotion. So, he destroyed all the spider’s creations and lit a lamp in the temple’s inner chamber.
Watching its webs being destroyed made the spider very angry. It wanted to eat the flame of the lamp and destroy the lamp with its web. As the spider moved closer to the flame. Impressed by the spider’s dedication, God Shiva asked if it wanted anything. The spider asked for salvation, saying it didn’t care about its own life. God Shiva happily granted the spider moksha, allowing it to become one with him. At the end of the Treta Yuga, a serpent named Kala lived in Dakshina-Kailasa, now known as Srikalahasti. Kala was a devoted follower of God Shiva. He collected many precious gems and brought them to worship Shiva. At the beginning of the Treta Yuga, an elephant named Hasti also lived in Dakshina-Kailasa. Hasti was a sincere devotee of Shiva too. After bathing in the Suvarnamukhi river, Hasti used his trunk to collect water and bathe the Shiva linga. He decorated the linga with beautiful lotuses. During their worship, a problem started. The elephant was moving the precious gems that the serpent Kala had collected for Shiva. In return, Kala would remove the lotuses and leaves that Hasti had placed on the linga to decorate it with diamonds. For a long time, they worshipped without meeting each other. One day, a fight broke out between them. The elephant tried to harm the serpent. Kala crawled into the elephant’s trunk, reached inside its head, and bit it many times. The elephant couldn’t bear the pain and slammed its head against the Kailasagiri hill. Both Kala and Hasti died from their injuries.
Suddenly God Shiva appeared from the linga and took their souls into Himself. From then on, God Shiva was called Sri-Kala-Hasti-Ishwara, which means God of Sri, Kala and Hasti. The main shrine’s linga shows the marks of the spider at the bottom, the elephant’s tusks in the middle, and the serpent’s hood at the top. And that is how the place became known as Srikalahasti.
Another interesting history of this temple is related to a devotee named Kannappa.
