National Day of Racial Healing: Statewide Discussion Hosted by NAACP Memphis and NAACP Tennessee

In observance of the National Day of Racial Healing, the NAACP Memphis Branch and the NAACP Tennessee State Conference convened a statewide discussion focused on racial equity, reconciliation and community healing.
Held Jan. 20 at First Baptist Church – Broad in Memphis, the event brought together faith leaders, civil rights advocates and community organizations to examine the ongoing work of racial healing in Tennessee and across the nation.
The discussion addressed the historical context of racial divisions, the role of community leadership and opportunities for collective action.
Speakers included Gloria Sweet-Love, president of the NAACP Tennessee State Conference; Dr. Keith Norman, pastor of First Baptist Church – Broad; Rachel Shankman, senior director of Facing History and Ourselves, Memphis office; Mauricio Calvo, president and chief executive officer of Latino Memphis; and Bishop Marvin F. Thomas Sr., a member of the NAACP National Board of Directors.
The discussion was moderated by Otis Sanford, columnist for The Daily Memphian and television analyst for ABC24 Memphis.
The event was presented in partnership with the Memphis Urban League, Shelby County Voter Alliance, Latino Memphis and MICAH Memphis and was available both in person and via online webinar.
