Instead of losing relevance, Grunge would gain more followers because of some albums like Superunknown (Soundgarden), Above (Mad Season), Purple (STP), Frogstomp (Silverchair), Live Through This (Hole), Nirvana's Unplugged and Live! Tonight! Sold Out! (the compilation of concerts that was being planned by Cobain) etc.
With the explosion of Green Day in 1994, they would be labeled Nirvana's rivals by the media, making fans of both bands fight each other.

After finishing In Utero's tour with much exhaustion, Nirvana enters a hiatus. After a lot of conversations, Dave Grohl decides to leave Nirvana and pursue a solo career named Foo Fighters.

Nirvana opens an audition for drummers and the best that appears is Taylor Hawkins, who decided to do the audition because he was insecure with the band Alanis Morissette (the record company's expectation with the second album of the band were very low). 
Kurt would regain his hopes after having Taylor Hawkins in the band because he is as good a musician as Grohl. With the change in the line-up, Kurt would make Pat Smear official as fourth member. This way, Nirvana's fourth album would only be released in 1996.
