A geoglyph is a large-scale design or image on the ground, created by arranging durable landscape elements like stones or earth, or by removing materials to expose the ground beneath.
'Marree Man' is a recently-found geoglyph etched into the South Australian landscape near Lake Eyre. This distinct profile depicts an Australian aboriginal warrior, poised holding and ready to launch what appears to be a stick or boomerang. It was first seen by a pilot in 1998 and has been of great interest to tourists ever since.
The 'Marree Man' is 4.2 kilometres from head to toe and 28 kilometres around the circumference. It is so named due to its proximity 60 km west of its nearest outback town of Marree.
The easily recognisable profile of the hunter must have been cut into the terrain using a bulldozer or grader blade. As this film shows, it needs to be viewed from the air at about 5000 feet. The origins of who was responsible and how the design came to be, have never been convincingly determined.
