Bohuslav Martinu: Arabesques (7) for cello & piano ("Études rhythmiques"), H. 201
Sebastian Benda, cello / Christian Benda, piano
I think Martinu is slowly becoming my favorite 20th century composer. Good thing I don't have to pick a favorite though.
I got the title placard a little wrong. Version H.201a is for violin, but I had a bit of trouble compiling this video and didn't want to do it yet again.
0:00 1. Poco allegro
1:46 2. Moderato
4:12 3. Andante moderato
7:01 4. Allegro
9:04 5. Adagio
11:40 6. Allegretto
13:10 7. Allegreto moderato
These lively pieces, alternately rustic, deeply moving, or sometimes even ragtime in feeling, did not mesh with my first attempt at a video showing actual arabesques as seen on middle-eastern architecture. The work does not seem to go with that exotic theme. Instead I'm now interpreting "arabesque" as meaning an intricate dance or pattern. Here then are various patterns, natural and synthetic -- and a few arabesques too for good measure. Enjoy!
