Like other entries in the Dynasty Warriors series, Dynasty Warriors: Origins is based on the Chinese novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. According to Producer Tomohiko Sho, however, Origins differs from previous titles in that it only covers the first half of the novel while being more thorough in telling the story. According to Sho, this departure is responsible for the new naming scheme.

Origins maintains the series trademark one versus a 1000 gameplay, with the player now able to give certain units commands such as ordering archer fire or ordering your troops to charge in a straight line. The player is also able to swap to the perspective of another general that they choose as a companion on the battlefield temporarily during the fight when certain conditions are met.

The combat combines once again normal attacks with stronger charge attacks to break enemy blocks. Repeated attacks will increase Bravery which the player can unleash to use Arts. Each weapon type has multiple different arts, which are unique powerful attacks.

For the first time in the series there is a parry, that can be performed by guarding at the right time of an enemy's attack. Parry is a powerful counter that will leave the enemy vulnerable for further attacks.

With evasion the player can avoid attacks that can't be blocked with a guard or a parry.
