After graduating he joined studio Annapuru in 1986 and made his debut as Animator on Aim for the Ace! 2. He went freelance in 1991. His first opportunity as an Animation Supervisor was on Dear Brother
His work at the time depicted very fast movement with somewhat exaggerated reactive movements, achieving something striking. He also showed his tendency to use smears, literally leaving a trail of the hair or limbs of the characters when they moved very fast, even deforming them entirely during a couple of drawings so that the resulting movement was quite dynamic. As for character acting, a couple of times he demonstrated being able to fill with expressiveness through strong body language
In 1994, he stood out as an animator of a combat scene in Casshern: Robot Hunter #04, in which he worked with designs that remain in the mold, with quite complex shading and acrobatic character movements that do not feel so exaggerated. The smears take on greater weight, being now a little more complex with the application of different layers of lighting and very marked angular shapes. In addition to that, he implemented a timing in which he added continuous drawings at specific moments (which he had already done since Aim for the Ace! 2) generating a good flow
One element that stands out a lot is his animation of debris, as it manages to generate a very strong feeling of weight with a good representation of inertia
That same year, the Crayon Shin-Chan movie 2 was screened, having action scenes that were incredibly well done and that would consolidate Andou's successful career as a combat animator. On this occasion, Shin-Chan's simple designs with little shading play in his favor, as Andou focused on making movements much more dynamic with a strong expressiveness while slightly deforming the limbs and the movement of the fabric helps the feeling of depth
To finish off 1994, we have his participation in Bakuen Campus Guardress #01 & #04, for which he shows something that seems like an evolution of the two previously mentioned works, as the designs are a bit complex and it implements quite a few smears, but the flow of the movement is completely different, feeling much better, more dynamic and with physical representations of weight, force and inertia with each movement, added to the exaggerated reactive movements in the characters, cloth and hair that make it stand out even more. He also demonstrated being able to work with complicated perspectives in which the parts of the characters came very close to the screen while handling a strong three-dimensional volume
He participated in major productions of the Realist School such as Patlabor 2, Ghost in The Shell, Magnetic Rose and Jin Rou, proving to have the necessary skills to meet the demands of animation supervisors such as Hiroyuki Okiura, Kazuchika Kise and Toshiyuki Inoue
For Cowboy Bebop The Movie he did a part of the final fight scene and it was so outstanding that even Action Animation Supervisor Yutaka Nakamura didn't correct it at all. Nakamura admires him a lot, but Andou feels that he lost to Nakamura as an animator, because of this he decided to move into directing roles
He became popular for making the characters' saliva and blood be present during combat with every blow, thus generating greater impact
Aside from action, he is skilled with character acting, mechanical and creature animation, as well as effects and background animation. It is quite rare for him to do work as an animator these days
