A major milestone has been achieved in the construction of the new M1 bridge over the Hunter River at Hexham, with the successful installation of the first pile cap.
Two massive 100-tonne precast concrete pile cap shells were placed onto completed river piles using 450-tonne and 400-tonne cranes.
These pile cap shells have been fabricated onsite since mid-2024.
Pile caps play a crucial role in bridge construction, distributing the load from the bridge superstructure to the supporting piles.
Pile caps are typically cast in position on site using temporary formwork. However, the use of pre-cast pile cap shells, that will be filled with concrete and form part of the permanent structure of the new M1 bridge, negates the need for temporary formwork and improves worker safety and efficiency. A total of nine pile caps will be installed on the over-water section of the viaduct.
With the first pile caps now in place, the next steps in construction will involve filling the pile caps, forming and casting the columns and headstocks, and then positioning the bridge girders.
The M1 bridge is part of the 2.6-kilometre viaduct spanning the Hunter River and surrounding floodplains. The bridge over the Hunter River is designed to be a long-lasting piece of infrastructure, with a 100-year lifespan ensuring reliability for generations to come.
