Have you ever noticed that not all stars in the night sky are the same color? Some are more yellow-orange while others are more blue. Why is this? The only difference between one star and another you can actually tell with the naked eye is its temperature - and that is revealed by its color! For over a century, astronomers have used a classification system that assigns a letter to different types of star based on their temperature - called the star's "spectral type" or "spectral class". This video gives a non-mathematical introduction to what that term actually means, and how it works!
