Russia isn't the first country to be subject to extreme economic sanctions.

Cuba has been subject to economic sanctions since 1958 when Fidel Castro took control during the Cuban Revolution.

South Africa also faced sanctions during the apartheid-era when institutional racial segregation was rampant.

Both of these examples had VERY different results, which begs the question...
