Sonic in Mario's Pants? The Infamous Somari and Its Crazy Variants

Have you ever imagined Super Mario performing the Spin Dash or speeding through tunnels at supersonic speed while curled into a ball? Well, this and much more is possible thanks to Somari, the infamous unauthorized conversion of Sonic the Hedgehog for the NES/Famicom, where Mario replaces Sonic. Created by Hummer Team, this curious game includes the iconic moves of Sega’s blue hedgehog and many zones from the Mega Drive version, though with simplified graphics and numerous design flaws and glitches.

Throughout the video, we showcase gameplay from Somari and its various versions, from Sonic 3D Blast 5 to the Doraemon hack, and even the lesser-known The Hummer, the quirky horse mascot of the developer. Discover why these games have gone from being NES-era oddities to becoming collectible gems for retro and quirky game fans.

Games included:

Somari (1994): The original game from Hummer Team, which replaces Sonic with Mario. The constant enemy respawns and level design flaws make it significantly more challenging than the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive game.

Sonic & Knuckles 5 (1997): The main screen shows Sonic and Knuckles, although the latter is not playable. The game starts in Spring Yard Zone, but players can access earlier zones using a level select cheat.

Sonic 3D Blast 6 (1997): This version features a modified title screen, and players start in Marble Zone.

Sonic the Hedgehog (1998): Based on Sonic & Knuckles 5, this version includes a modified title screen where only Sonic appears. Players once again start in Spring Yard Zone.

The Hummer: Released in the Super New Year Cart 15-in-1 collection by Hong Jing, this hack features a new character sprite and some recolored backgrounds.

Samuri Variant: Included in the obscure Samuri 60-in-1 system, this variant offers altered backgrounds and separates levels into individual games.

Family Kid: A basic hack that replaces Mario with Family Kid. While it retains the original gameplay, it’s missing some graphics. This version can be found in a 2-in-1 multicart alongside the Aladdin 4 hack.

Doraemon: Perhaps the most extensive hack, this version completely replaces Somari with Doraemon. It includes new level designs and music, borrowing graphics from various other games, and features unique gameplay mechanics.
