Comedian Colin Quinn on divided America: “USSR broke up. Why can't we break up?”

Comedian and “Saturday Night Live” alum Colin Quinn is going after everyone—Democrats, Republicans, independents and the “fastest typists” on Twitter, in his new one-man show “Red State Blue State,” now playing at New York’s Minetta Lane Theatre. Quinn joined Salon’s Dean Obeidallah on “Salon Talks” to discuss why divided America’s musings on Twitter is both comedic gold and horrible for comedians.

“There's no room for any ambiguity or contradictory,” Quinn said about politics in America today. “You're either in lock-step, you're either 100 percent down the line with everything liberals or conservatives believe, or you're not part of that. That's the way it is. That's weird to me.”

In “Red State Blue State,” Quinn actually proposes a solution for America’s fighting: dividing the country into nation-states. On the other hand, Quinn believes there are independents among us, but they’re just not fit for today’s discourse that amplifies the loudest voices online. “They're not so focused. They're not the zealots that are out there every day going, ‘Listen to what I'm saying. I'm right. I'm right. I'm right.’” he said.
