Al Imam Al Nawawi's 40 Hadeeth Hadeeth 8 (English & Arabic) by Abu Rasheed

أُمِرْتُ - I was commanded
أَنْ - that / to
أُقَاتِلَ - I fight
النَّاسَ - the people
حَتَّى - untilيَشْهَدُو
ا - they bear witness
أَنْ - that
لَا - there is no
إِلَهَ - deityإِلَّ
ا - except
اللَّهُ - Allah
وَأَنَّ - and that
مُحَمَّدًا - Muhammad
رَسُولُ - (is the) Messenger
اللَّهِ - of Allah
وَيُقِيمُوا - and they establish
الصَّلَاةَ - the prayer
وَيُؤْتُوا - and they give
الزَّكَاةَ - the alms
فَإِذَا - so when
فَعَلُوا - they do
ذَلِكَ - that
عَصَمُوا - they protected
مِنِّي - from me
دِمَاءَهُمْ - their blood
وَأَمْوَالَهُمْ - and their wealth
إِلَّا - except
بِحَقِّ - by the right of
الْإِسْلَامِ - Islam
وَحِسَابُهُمْ - and their reckoning
عَلَى - is upon
اللَّهِ - Allah
تَعَالَى - the Most High
الْحَدِيثُ - the ḥadīth
التَّالِي - following
مِنْ - is from
الْأَحَادِيثِ - the narrations
الَّتِي - which
يُسَاءُ - are misunderstood
فَهْمُهَا - their meaning
فَلِذَلِكَ - so therefore
سَأَذْكُرُ - I will mention
فَقَطْ - only
مَا - what
قَالَهُ - was said by
عُلَمَاؤُنَا - our scholars
مَا - what
مَعْنَى - is the meaning of
أُقَاتِلَ النَّاسَ" - "(I) fight the people"?
هَذَا - this
هُوَ - is
الْجُزْءُ - the part
الْأَكْثَرُ - the most
إِثَارَةً - provoking
لِلْجَدَلِ - of controversy
وَسُوءِ - and of mis
الْفَهْمِ - understanding
فِي - in
الْحَدِيثِ - the ḥadīth
هَلْ - is it
الْمَقْصُودُ - intended
بِـ"النَّاسِ" - by "the people"
كُلُّ - all
النَّاسِ - people
أَمْ - orجَمَاعَةٌ - a group
مُعَيَّنَةٌ - specific?
اسْتِنَادًا - based on
إِلَى - upon
سِيَاقِ - the context of
حَيَاةِ - the life of
النَّبِيِّ ﷺ - the Prophet
وَأَفْعَالِ - and the actions of
الْأَجْيَالِ - the generations
الَّتِي - which
جَاءَتْ - came
بَعْدَهُ - after him
يُفْهَمُ - it is understood
أَنَّ - that
هَذَا - this
الْحَدِيثَ - ḥadīthلَ
ا - does not
يُشِيرُ - refer
إِلَى - to
جَمِيعِ - all
النَّاسِ - the people
فَقَدْ - for indeed
كَانَ - there were
هُنَاكَ - there
كَثِيرٌ - many
مِنَ - of
النَّاسِ - the people
لَمْ - not
يُقَاتِلْهُمْ - he fought them
وَكَانَ - and there were
بَعْضُهُمْ - some of them
لَا - not
يُؤْمِنُونَ - believing
بِالْإِسْلَامِ - in Islam
وَمَعَ - and with
ذَلِكَ - that
كَانَتْ - there were
بَيْنَهُ - between him
وَبَيْنَهُمْ - and them
عُقُودُ - contracts
سَلَامٍ - of peace
وَكَانَ - and there were
هُنَاكَ - there
أُنَاسٌ - people
آخَرُونَ - others
كَانُوا - who were
يَدْفَعُونَ - paying
الْجِزْيَةَ - the jizya (tax)
لَمْ - they were not
يَكُونُوا - be
مُسْلِمِينَ - Muslims
وَلَكِنَّهُمْ - but they
كَانُوا - were
يَدْفَعُونَ - paying
هَذِهِ - this
الضَّرِيبَةَ - tax
إِلَى - to
الدَّوْلَةِ - the state
الْإِسْلَامِيَّةِ - Islamic
لِيَحْظَوْا - to receive
بِالْحِمَايَةِ - protection
وَيَتَلَقَّوْا - and receive
الْخَدَمَاتِ - services
