Session 18: Course Examination

This video covers “Course Examination”, the eighteenth and final session in the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship Research Design Course, directed by Dr. Michael Mojica and Dr. Michael Tunik. This capstone session reviews and reinforces key concepts from throughout the course through structured examination questions, offering fellows an opportunity to test their mastery of research design principles.

• Asking an Answerable Research Question: Identifying appropriate outcomes and interventions using the PICO framework for diagnostic and prognostic studies.
• FINER Criteria: Recognizing feasibility and ethical considerations in study design.
• Searching the Medical Literature: Understanding how to navigate databases such as Medline, Embase, and Cochrane using search engines like PubMed.
• Study Design: Distinguishing between observational, interventional, and diagnostic studies, and identifying sources of bias (recall, detection, selection).
• Statistical Concepts: Applying power analysis, effect size, and hypothesis types (superiority, equivalence, non-inferiority) in sample size determination.
• IRB and Ethical Oversight: Understanding informed consent, assent, waivers, and research protections for vulnerable populations.
• Grant Funding: Reviewing NIH structure, funding mechanisms, and scoring criteria.
• Data Collection and Management: Designing surveys, coding data accurately, ensuring integrity and confidentiality.
• Presenting and Publishing Results: Constructing posters, delivering oral presentations, navigating the peer review process, and adhering to ICMJE authorship guidelines.
• Research Ethics: Upholding principles of respect for persons, beneficence, and justice in study design and dissemination.

This session consolidates the entire research design curriculum—integrating methodology, ethics, and communication skills—culminating in a comprehensive final examination designed to reinforce readiness for independent scholarly work.
