Union Carbide was an American chemical and polymers company that is a subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company, known for its role in the 1984 Bhopal gas disaster in India. The original company was a pioneer in the petrochemicals industry and developed products like Prestone antifreeze and Eveready batteries before selling off many consumer product lines. The Indian subsidiary, Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL), operated the pesticide plant in Bhopal where a deadly gas leak occurred.

The Bhopal disaster
