Mayor Reads February episode is related to reconciliation.
These videos are one of the ways that Edmonton’s Mayor Don Iveson connects to community. As a father of 2 young children and a champion for literacy as well as our public library - he understands the value of sharing books. He has countless invitations to read to school groups but can't possibly accept them all. In an effort to “share our Mayor” and connect to children (and adults) through books we have created a project called Mayor Reads. Monthly episodes are based on books which may be related to seasonal themes or city issues that would appeal to our intended audience of elementary students and families.
Shi-shi-etko was chosen as it gently portrays a young child finding strength and resilience before she must leave for Residential School. We hope sharing this story might help to start conversations, deepen understanding and foster reconciliation.
