Placing oyster spat on substrate is a sustainable way to stimulate new reefs. Because the oysters attach themselves to each other, they allow the reef to grow naturally. To further support the settlement process, we are investigating the effects of reef sounds. We are investigating whether flat oysters use artificial sounds to find a suitable location. If so, these sounds can be used to increase the chances of successful settlement.

About the consortium: This project is a unique collaboration between nine partners, each contributing their own knowledge and experience: Wageningen Marine Research, Wageningen University, ARK Rewilding Netherlands, Stichting Zeeschelp, Waardenburg Ecology, Ocean Health (an initiative of Van Oord), TenneT, the Port of Rotterdam Authority, and De Rijke Noordzee. For three years, these companies, knowledge institutions, and nature organizations will join forces to further develop the remote setting method.
