A 7.6 magnitude earthquake has struck off Japan’s northeastern coast.
The earthquake was felt at about 11:15 pm local time.
A tsunami advisory is in place for Miyagi and Fukushima, with up to 90,000 people being instructed to evacuate.
Tsunami warnings of up to three meters have been issued for parts of the Pacific coastline, with residents being warned to move to higher ground.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says waves may also reach Russia, Guam and the Philippines.
