The first and most important reason why Ram and cummins could be looking at a larger displacement engine is because of the upcoming 2027 Emission regulations and the needing to lower nox gases. a great way to achieve this is to lower cylinder temperature but this often results in lower power figures. a great way to off-set this is to use a larger displacement engine that can have the same power but not need to run as hot doing so.
the second reason is similar but a larger displacement engine does not need to be under as much pressure to make the same high power figures and this could result in better longevity of these cummins engines.
But without a doubt I think the biggest reason any diesel engine manufactuer does what they do today is to meet emission regulations expecially with cummins having been hit with a record breaking fine earlier this year for avoiding emission regulations.
