I recently managed to learn, after lots of experimenting, how to replace, tune, and temper clock chime rods to make new ones have many of the acoustic properties found in older clocks. Here is a before and after video of my larger 1920s Kienzle mantel clock, demonstrating the difference between its original (replacement) set of chime rods, and the new set I prepared for it. Notice the added shimmer and resonance in the new set, resulting from careful filing of the neck of each rod before being installed onto the gong.
