AMBER VALLEY PARISH #1: SOUTH WINGFIELD

Welcome to Amber Valley folks, and this is the parish of South Wingfield. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because we already covered North Wingfield some time ago

You’ll recall North Wingfield is in North East Derbyshire but the two places are not that far apart. Thier names are both formed from "winn" meaning pasture and "feld meaning open land

An ex-mining village, South Wingfield has a mixed community. Its most famous landmark is Wingfield Manor, which once was used to detain Mary Queen of Scots

The village is about six miles away from the town of Matlock and shares a border with Wessington at Amber Row. As such, the River Amber runs through the parish

The centre of the village is known as the Market Place, where Manor Road, Church Lane, Inns Lane and High Road all meet. Its church is a way out of the village towards Oakerthorpe

The boundaries extends to cover that, as well as the hamlet of Moorwood Moor, and both places feature some interesting pubs

All of this is encased within some more fabulous Derbyshire countryside – and its not flat. In fact some of these hills are a little bit on the steep side! Nonetheless it was still enjoyable.
