Revelation is not the description of the end of the world. Rather, it is an angelic vision uncovering how God's promise to break the curse of evil and restore creation to everlasting shalom will come to fulfillment. And all those terrifying images of bloody battles and beasts and dragons? Church, those aren't predictions of the future. They are prophetic visions revealing the destructive reality of the powers and principalities we are encountering right now.
Here is the unbelievable truth of revelation: all the real things that terrify us--wars and climate collapse, rulers and empires, pandemics and genocide--they already have been, are now and will be overcome by the resurrected Christ. Revelation shows us that truly--in spite of what we see and hear--we have nothing to fear. And once we, like John, have consumed the scroll, we are empowered and set free to do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with God right here, right now.
The book of Revelation is unbelievably good. And also, let's face it, S-T-R-A-N-G-E.
