HiDef: Johnstown & Carney Crossing

August 17th 2011 was day 3 of my Pennsylvania vacation. I started the day in Lilly, PA and spent most of the morning there. Unfortunately, the only trains to be seen were Amtrak and a couple of helper moves. I finally gave up and went to Johnstown to check out the area---still no trains. So I went and got lunch at the City View Bar & Grill. This restaurant is located way up on the bluffs and provides a birds eye view of the NS mainline. The restaurant is next door to the Johnstown incline plane and the Johnstown overlook. The first scene in this video was captured from this overlook.

I was hoping things would break loose after I caught the helper move but that was not the case. Around an hour later with no more trains I figured out why there was so little traffic-a very large track gang had been working just west of town. As I was eating lunch, I saw them move machine after machine east to get in the clear. Finally the trains started showing up.

I don't know how, but this coal train almost got by me before I could get a shot. I managed to recover quick enough to get a video of it, but it isn't pretty.

After catching a few trains in Johnstown, the sun wasn't getting any better and the view of the bridge was getting to be a bit monotonous. So I went back towards Cresson and wound up at Carney Crossing just East of Lilly, PA.
