After hearing the claim that it costs 84 pence to boil the kettle the author decided to investigate. Simple calculations based upon the cost of electricity, heat capacity of water, the temperature of the water out of the cold tap and its boiling temperature suggested that the theoretically it should be around 3.4 pence. Practical measurements using a stopwatch and clamp meter to measure the current consumption of the author’s kettle found that the true cost was 3.7 pence suggesting that the kettle was 90% efficient at converting electrical energy into useful heat.
When a similar experiment was conducted on a domestic gas hob, the household smart meter showed an energy cost of less than a penny.
The author posted all of this on social media and an interesting dialogue ensured which explored various aspects of the public’s understanding of science leading to the further studies.
First presented at "Thermal Analysis & Calorimetry 2023", University of Huddersfield, filmed by Adam Watson & edited by Duncan Price.
