The role of Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter film series was played by two different actors. Richard Harris played Dumbledore in the first two films, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001) and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002). Harris died in 2002 after being diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, a type of cancer. After Harris died, Michael Gambon played Dumbledore in the remaining six films in the series, released from 2004 to 2011. Gambon was a well-regarded stage actor who won three Olivier Awards.
