History of Tomoka State Park

Tomoka State Park is located on land that has been inhabited for thousands of years and holds deep cultural and historical significance in Florida. Long before European arrival, the area along the Tomoka and Halifax Rivers was home to the Timucua people, a Native American civilization that thrived on fishing, shellfish harvesting, and river-based trade.

The park is named after Chief Tomokie, a Timucua leader whose name and legacy remain central to the region’s identity. Shell middens, burial mounds, and archaeological artifacts found in the area provide evidence of continuous indigenous settlement dating back more than 1,000 years.

In the early 1500s, Spanish explorers entered the region, followed by centuries of colonial influence, conflict, and cultural change. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the land surrounding modern-day Tomoka State Park was used for plantations, river transport, and maritime commerce, taking advantage of its strategic river access.

Today, Tomoka State Park preserves this layered history alongside its natural beauty.
