Instruction for double welt pocket

Cut out the pocket pieces: Cut two rectangular pocket pieces, one pocket facing piece, and two welt pieces. The pocket and welt pieces should be cut to the size and shape you want your finished pocket to be.

Mark the pocket placement: Use chalk or a fabric pen to mark the location of your pocket on your garment. Place the pocket facing piece on top of the garment with right sides together and align it with the pocket placement marks.

Stitch the pocket facing: Stitch the pocket facing to the garment around the perimeter of the pocket, leaving the top edge open. Trim the seam allowance and clip the corners.

Create the welt openings: Place the welt pieces on top of the pocket facing piece, with right sides together and aligning the edges. Mark the center of each welt piece, and then draw a rectangle with the center mark as the midpoint of the rectangle. Cut along the rectangle lines to create the welt openings.

Fold the welt pieces: Fold each welt piece in half lengthwise, with right sides together. Stitch along the short ends to create a tube, then turn them right side out.

Insert the welts: Place the folded welt pieces into the welt openings on the pocket facing piece, aligning the folded edge with the edges of the opening. Pin in place.

Stitch the welts: Stitch along the folded edges of the welt pieces to secure them in place.

Sew the pocket bags: Place the two rectangular pocket pieces right sides together, and stitch around the perimeter, leaving a small opening for turning. Trim the seam allowance and clip the corners.

Attach the pocket bags: Insert the pocket bags into the pocket facing piece and align them with the welt openings. Stitch around the perimeter of the pocket facing piece to attach the pocket bags to the facing.

Finish the pocket: Fold the pocket facing piece to the inside and press the edges. Stitch the top edge of the pocket facing piece to the garment to secure it in place.
