Cubs begin their pursuit of the 1984 NL East championship as the 2nd place Mets come into town. Cy Young award winner Rick Sutcliff (14-1) starts for the Cubs and Ron Darling (12-6) for the Mets. Cubs get a pair of runs in the 4th inning, on a RBI Double from CF Bob Denier and a sac fly from 2B Ryne Sandberg proved to be enough for a easy win for Rick Sutcliffe who was in control since the 1st inning, pitching a complete game, giving up 1 run on 8 hits striking out 6 while walking none. C Jody Davis hits a grand slam in the 6th (off reliever Brent Gaff) Cubs on their way to clinch the NL East with a week to go in the season Sutcliffe the win and Darling the loss.
