Then it got ugly

Thick, sticky, clay mud by the time of my second shift turned knobbies into slicks, jammed into brake calipers, chain guide, front sprocket area, foot pegs, and between wheels and forks and swing arm while adding probably over 50 pounds of weight. Literally! I couldn't hold a line or make corners properly or even stay upright a lot of the time. Without the help of a flagger and at least three younger competitors to help me pick up my bike, I really think I might not have been able to finish my third lap. A crash that twisted my forks made things even worse. It became a matter of trying my best to finish my lap so that my teammate could take over and not be out because of my failures. I think this lap took me around an hour and thirty-five minutes not including time the camera was off to get enough mud off to get the bike rolling again (more than three times as long as either of the other two laps).
