It's Octomore-Tober! It's the end of the year for the 14s, as the 15s are now out on shelves where in the US. To celebrate, I'm reviewing Octomore 14.3 AND comparing it in a head to head tasting with 14.2...
Octomore is the highest (by peat content on the malted barley) scotch whisky, and is bottled at near cask strength. What makes it really special is how drinkable and rewarding it is. There are 3 different versions each year, with the 14.3 beginning with a malt that was 100% Islay grown on the Octomore farm near the distillery. It was aged for 5 years in bourbon and wine casks. It has a staggering PPM of 214.2 and an ABV of 61.4%! In this review, I taste, rate and review this special whisky.
I also put it in a blind head to head tasting match-up with 14.2, which was aged in Oloroso and Italian Amazon wine casks, before being finished in French wine casks. Which will come out on top?
