Long overdue, my apologies.
I had alot of struggles throughout this finishing process, but I do think the results are worth it; the final product is one I feel I can be proud of and learned alot more about custom finishes then I had before along with the actual design of handles and paddles.
In this video I take you through several of the small design changes I made and the overall finishing process I used; sanding, staining with india-ink and water, polyurethaning, adding embellishments to leather, making a leather wrap handle and attaching a counterweight to bring it into balance.
This was actually the 4th time I had to re-do the finish; encountering problems from: trying to use commercial products (and finding the results good, but not great), trying to use one kind of dye vs another, temperature problems while using lacquer based finishes, chemical interactions and realizing Red Oak may be the worst wood to try and stain ever. Really the whole project went south on me several times, but this was the final process I ended up using and my results did turn out well. Chiefly this process taught me not to experiment on these videos, it really made me loose alot of time and caused me quite a few headaches.
Sorry this video is so long but it really does cover ALOT of work. If your making a paddle yourself and just are looking for it to be functional rather then decorative, your work can be cut in half by just using over the counter solutions such as Minwax products. This video is for making something a bit more complex, though alot of what I show is good for many projects and wood-working in general.
