The Lucknow Race Course was established in 1880 as a legacy of the British Raj and is one of India's oldest racecourses. It is known for its historical significance and unique features.
Establishment and Early Use: Horse racing in India was introduced by the British, and most cantonments, including Lucknow, had their own racecourses. The Lucknow Race Course was officially established in 1880, with the first recorded event, the Civil Service Cup Race, taking place in 1883.
Unique Features: The course is spread across 70.22 acres, with a track length of around 3200 meters, making it one of the longest in India. Notably, it was once the only track in the country where races were run in an anti-clockwise direction, following the British practice.
Colonial Legacy: In its early days, the owners of the horses were mostly British army officers and titled aristocracy. The architecture of the British-era buildings and stands at the race course reflects this colonial heritage.
