On the 8th of December 2024 Republicans gathered outside Belleek to remember Antoine Mac Giolla Bhrighde and Ciarán Fleming for their 40th Anniversary.
It was an emotional day, especially as Ciarán and Antoine's family had travelled to Fermanagh to join the Commemoration.
We remembered our past with pride as we looked to the future with hope and confidence.
First Song;
Ciarán Fleming - Hero of the Eighties by The Spirit of Freedom
Written by Tony Kelly and performed by Tony's band Spirit of Freedom. Tony knew both Ciarán and Antoine and had escaped Long Kesh alongside Ciarán in 1983.
Second Song;
Tony McBride (Antoine Mac Giolla Bhrighde) by The Irish Brigade
Third Poem;
Cold December Night by Martin McGovern
Poem written specifically for the 40th Anniversary by Fermanagh native, and former Sinn Féin Councillor, Martin McGovern. And recited at the Commemoration.
*********
The 2nd of December 2024 marked the 40th Anniversary of Antoine Mac Giolla Bhrighde and Ciarán Fleming who died on Active Service in Fermanagh in 1984.
They died just outside of Kesh after a shootout with the SAS. Óglach Antoine Mac Giolla Bhrighde was wounded by the SAS, then tortured and executed by them.
Under heavy fire the IRA Active Service Unit withdrew across the swollen River Bannagh, where sadly Óglach Ciarán Fleming, a non-swimmer, was swept away and drowned.
