Wetlands are a critical part of the ecosystem of the Great Barrier Reef and they also provide many other ecosystem services such as blue carbon sequestration and buffering from storm surges. Wetlands are so important that projects in Far North Queensland are constructing manmade wetlands on farms to filter farm runoff into local waterways that lead to the reef.
