In March of 2006, the Katie Reider Band made its second trip to NYC, to perform at The Bitter End in Greenwich Village, showcasing before a handful of major label reps. This song is from that show, and the eighth in our set.
“Mr. Mystery” is the first song that Katie and finished writing together. I had this guitar riff in my head, and sent it to her to see if it sparked any ideas. What she sent back was very similar to what you hear in the verses, and “Hey, Mr. Mystery...” was her initial lyric idea.
We sent lyric ideas back and forth for about a week or two, and then really drilled-down to finish the song one night at her house. I have a great memory of us working diligently through it in her basement; determined to finish (Gotta finish! We're so close!). We emerged victorious, and Katie was happy and proud of it.
The inside joke is that my last name starts with an E, and so I am “Mr. E.” She would sometimes lean on that phrase and look at me when we performed it.
