Russian state media are celebrating the “grand reopening” of the Mariupol Drama Theater, presenting it as a symbol of peace, reconstruction, and cultural revival.

But behind the fresh paint and staged applause lies one of the most devastating war crimes of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In the early days of the full-scale invasion, Russian aircraft bombed the Mariupol Drama Theater while hundreds of civilians sheltered inside. The word “CHILDREN” was clearly written outside the building – and visible from the air.

Nearly four years later, Russian authorities have turned a site of mass civilian killing into a stage for propaganda.
